After the crude ore is processed, it is separated into iron ore concentrate and waste product known as tailings. The tailings are pumped via a tailings line to the tailings disposal area. Since about 70% of the crude ore from this mine is tailings, over the 27 year lifetime of the mine, this tailings disposal area now covers a large area.
The photo below shows the final resting place of the tailings. Although this pile is only about half as tall as the overburden, it is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and runs adjacent to Highway 389.
