Visitor Center

Visitor Center

The Visitor Center and Office Complex are the angled concrete structures in the background. During construction this area had been the base camp which housed 13,000 workers; in fact, the visitor's center is the only original building left in the area and was used as a cafeteria. The other buildings, including bunkhouses, stores and schools for employee's children, were dismantled when construction was completed. Power transmission lines are visible in the background.

The top photo was taken from the top of the dam and shows the north side of the building; the lower photo was taken from the road and shows the south side.

Associated Buildings

From the top of the dam you can see (a) Powerplant 1 to the left, (b) Manicouagan River, (c) Maintenance Buildings, (d) the Visitor Center, (e) the tailrace from Powerplant 2, and (f) you can see miles and miles of power lines leaving this hydroelectric complex and snaking through the mountains.

Unfortunately, we were not permitted to take photos inside the dam, powerhouse or Visitor's Center. For information and photos of what a hydroelectric generating plant looks like on the inside, please visit the Labrador section and click on Churchill Falls.
