A Scoff an' Scuff's Labrador
Quebec Highway 138 - St. Lawrence Seaway

St. Lawrence view

The St. Lawrence Seaway is dotted with islands easily viewable from the Quebec Northshore mainland. These islands have been settled by farmers and fishermen.

Many of the smaller islands do not have a direct link to the mainland and the island residents often have to depend on boat to traverse the open water. In winter, if the water freezes between the mainland and their island, snowmobiles are used to transport them over the frozen expanse. Because of their position in the St. Lawrence, these islands are subjected to severe, sometimes brutal storms which originated in the North Atlantic. In winter, they may be cut off for days and sometimes weeks; therefore, it is essential the residents are well stocked with provisions and other necessities.
