Hanging Valley at Gros Morne

Hanging Valley

This area did not have a title that we found; however, there was a plaque with information about hanging valleys; therefore, we call it the Hanging Valley area. There were also many mushrooms around the parking lot of this area.

Hanging Valley

This photograph shows a hanging valley which was created when a smaller glacier intersected the main glacier. Apparently, the floors of a glacier tributary erode at a slower rate then the floor of the main valley. When the glacier thaws, it leaves the valley at a higher elevation.

From the beauty of this area, it's easy to see why tourism at Gros Morne is not a recent event. The first tourists were British warships who stopped for rest in the 1700's. Sportsmen started arriving in the 1850's. By the 1920's, coastal steamers and passenger ships opened tourism even more. Later the unique geology and plants beckoned geologists and botanists from around the world. In the 1940's, the famous American sportsman, Lee Wulff, created fishing camps here; when Gary was a boy, he helped gas Mr. Wulff's plane when he'd fly to St. John's. Finally in 1959, discussions started about making their beautiful area a park. It became a National Park in 1973 and in 1987 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
