Trout River Pond

At Trout River Pond, the red cliffs on the north shore are formed of mantle rock normally found deep in the earth's interior. These mountains were thrust to the surface hundreds of thousands of years ago when two continents collided. Gros Morne is one of a few areas in the world where this geological phenomenon occurred and is the main reason it was established as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

These rocks contain high concentrations of magnesium and iron; therefore, they are almost devoid of plant and animal life. This rare environment only grows rare types of plants.

Debbie's theory is different from that of the scientific community. She's certain the fjords and cliffs are remnants of prehistoric strip mining. She bases this on the similarity to the iron ore pit mines in Labrador West. *smile*
