The town of Woody Point is nestled in the natural beauty of the south shore of Bonne Bay. While touring this area we were fortunate enough to spot a whale. A fisherman in a skiff was trying to steer it away from fishing nets where it could have became entangled and drowned.
The small communities on the north shore of Bonne Bay became connected by dirt road in the 1950s.
Since it is located on the south shore, Woody Point was not connected by road to the surrounding communities until 1967. Prior to that time transportation to the north shore was provided by a ferry. The dirt roads made in the 50s were finally paved in the mid-1970s. At that time the south-shore town of Trout River finally became linked to other communities. Many communities in Newfoundland and Labrador are still not connected by roads.
Small communities such as Woody Cove, Lobster Cove, Green Point, Belldowns Point, and Bakers Brook were forcibly relocated to larger communities when Gros Morne was established as a National Park in 1973. Although hunting has been abolished in the park, local residents can still gather wood to use in heating their homes.
