This sunset is taken a block from our cabin in Rocky Harbor.

The wonderful hues of the sunset were reflected in the warm friendliness of the local people who met us with smiles and waves. Rocky Harbour is another community in the Bonne Bay area which has greatly benefited from the creation of the Gros Morne National Park. The town has grown from a small fishing community to the park's operational headquarters. Most accommodations and tours for the park now originate from this community. The unstable income from fishing was quickly replaced by jobs in tourism as many fishermen opened restaurants and stores to service the growing tourist trade.

During a storm in December 1919, the S.S. Ethie ran aground north of Rocky Harbour. Over the decades, the salt water has claimed most of the remains; however, the boiler and some other parts from the wrecked ship have endured. Legend tells us that a collie-type dog played an active role in rescuing the 92 people aboard the floundering steamer. Photos of the steamer are available from another site.
