This bronze caribou, a gift of Bowring’s cousin, William Howe Green, is a tribute to the men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who fought in World War I.
This statue is a duplicate of the one in Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park in France. It pays tribute to those Newfoundlanders who fought in the First World War and have no known graves.
Saturday, July 1, 1916 was the opening day of the Battle of Somme.
In the fight for Beaumont Hamel, the Newfoundland Regiment was almost wiped out before they left their trenches.
Of the 780 officers and enlisted who advanced, only 68 were able to answer roll call the next morning. Final statistics revealed 310 were killed and 374 were wounded or missing.
