Bowring Park is located about 5 K (3 miles) from downtown St. John's. It was established in 1911 after the Bowring Family (local businessmen) donated 50 acres of land to the city to celebrate their 100 year anniversary of doing business. It took the landscape architect, Rudolph Cochius of Holland, five years (1912-1917) to complete this beautiful, historic park.

The park was officially opened in 1914 by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, (third son of Queen Victoria) who donated $50,000 that was used to purchase an additional 150 acres bringing the park to 200 acres in size.

This statue of Peter Pan was donated by Bowring in memory of his step-son and grand-daughter, Betty Munn, both of whom were drowned when the Florizel sank. The dedication states, "In memory of a little girl who loved the Park." This statue was sculpted by Sir George Frampton and is a duplicate of his original which stands in Kensington Gardens, London.
