Western Bay is the birthplace of E.J. Pratt, (1883–1964) one of Canada's most respected poets. We can easily understand how living in such beautiful surroundings could have propelled him towards a life of writing.

The 1871 Lovell's Directory says: "WESTERN BAY - A large fishing settlement on the north shore of Conception Bay in the district of Bay de Verds. This can hardly be called a harbor it is so exposed, yet it may be counted the best on the north side of Conception Bay, from Carbonear to Bay de Verds, and numbers of boats are employed in the cod fishery from this settlement. The land around has been cultivated to a considerable extent, most of the population engage in farming as an adjunct to the fisheries. Distant from Carbonear by road 17 miles . Mail weekly. Population 895."
