The town's recorded history goes back 560 to 575 million years ago. This is based on a 2004 archeological discovery by Guy Narbonne. He found Rangeomorph fossils from the mysterious Ediacaran era. The Rangeomorphs are some of the earliest complex life forms. Later history includes Basque and Portugese fishermen who frequented the area in the 1500s and 1600s. The town was settled in 1705 and incorporated in 1965. The current population is 2,694.
