Although not historically a whaling community; some people decorate their yards with whale jaw bones. Also, some people use the back bone vertebra to denote walkways or as stools to sit on.

Bay Roberts is nestled on the Appalachian mountains with bays on each side of the peninsula (Bay Roberts Bay and Spaniard's Bay).

Known as the "Hub of the Bay," Bay Roberts boasts of many services besides maritime and docking. Other services include: health, dental, education, car dealerships, restaurants, grocery and department stores.

Bay Roberts was founded in the 1500s. During King William's War of 1689-1697, Bay Roberts was destroyed by the French.
In 1910, The Western Union Cable Company started landing trans-Atlantic cable to Bay Roberts. Eventually, ten of the world's fastest trans-Atlantic cables were landed there. Hundreds of local and world-wide employees were employed at the Bay Roberts station.
This town has many recreational facilities including: indoor swimming pool, five playgrounds, recreational field with outdoor lighting, tennis courts and an indoor arena.
The population in 2006 is 5,414; which makes it the tenth largest town in the province.
