Settlement of the area started in the early 1700s. During the hurricane on September 17, 1775, a ship carrying 400 passengers crashed there. This hurricane killed 4,000 fishermen and had swells between 20 and 30 feet tall. It was the first recorded hurricane to reach Atlantic Canada; and Canada's worst natural disaster. The town of Northern Bay has maintained a population of about 290 since 1836.
