A Scoff an' Scuff's Labrador
Brigus's Memorial to Captain Robert A. Bartlett

Click on Photos for larger view.

This statue honors "Captain Bob," the man who commanded the Roosevelt on Peary's expeditions to the South pole in 1905-06 and 1908-09; and who commanded the Kurluk on the first expedition to the North pole. He made many trips to those icy, torturous waters from 1926 to 1945. His home, Hawthorne Cottage, that is more then 160 years old, is a National Historic Site.

The Hubbard Medal, the highest award of the National Geographic Society, was bestowed upon Captain Bartlett in 1909. This award was in recognition of his strength and determination that helped make Peary's expeditions successful.

He was born Aug. 15, 1875, in Brigus; he died Apr. 28, 1946, in New York City. He is buried in the Methodist cemetery in Brigus.
