A view of Duckworth Street

Quaint narrow streets and colorful clapboard buildings make St. John's a vacationer's paradise and parking a nightmare. The bright purple, red, green and mustard painted buildings certainly cheer up a long, white winter. One block north of the harbour, stands Water Street, the oldest commercial street on the continent. Because of it's resemblance to an old European village, it's easy to imagine 18th century fishers, servants, traders, fishing captains, pirates, naval officers and their families going about their business or pleasure on these narrow streets.
The town is much more than commerce and homes. It boasts of two cathedrals, one Roman Catholic and one Anglican, both named for St. John the Baptist. In 1855, when the Roman Basilica was built, it was the largest church in North America. The Anglican cathedral was destroyed by fire, but rebuilt to exacting standards.
Newfoundland has its own time zone, Newfoundland Time Zone, which is ½ hour east of than Atlantic Time or 1½ hours east of Eastern Time.
