Signal Hill

There are many trails that wind around Signal Hill and the surrounding areas. Once such trail is named Lady's Walk and commands an excellent view of the Atlantic Ocean and Cuckold Cove. When sailing ships plied the high seas, women would walk this high ridge to look for their husband's approaching sea vessel. One story tells of a woman who walked this ridge for over a decade hoping her husband would return from the sea after the vessel he served on sank.

In 1780, the battery at Cuckold Cove was built to help protect the fishery against American privateers and French invasion. Today, remains of the tavern's foundation shows where soldiers and sailors enjoyed their time off-duty. If you left the tavern tipsy and headed the wrong direction, it wouldn't be difficult to fall over the nearby cliff. With an elevation of over 183 M (600 ft) the first step would be a long one and possibly your last.
