The Cape Spear lighthouse was built in 1835 and is the oldest lighthouse still standing in Newfoundland. It overlooks a 91 M (300 ft) sandstone cliff. This lighthouse served as a maritime beacon from 1835 until 1955. At that time, it was replaced by a more modern facility; however, the old lighthouse still stands. The lighthouse is the centerpiece of a National Historic Park which was opened by Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1983.
