Built in the early 1960s, Carol Lake Shopping Center was the first shopping center in Labrador City. This portion of center was taken from the western parking lot and shows not quite half of this large building. The sidewalk along this section is the hang-out for many youth during the hours when the teen center is not open. | |

In 1974, a memorable snowstorm hit the area. The fresh, blowing snow piled so high in front of Dominion Stores (now LoLo Foods) that the only way to enter the building was to walk along the awning ledge shown in this photo, work your way down a small hole in the snow and slide to the sidewalk below. The whole front area shown in this photograph was just a snow hill. |
During this same storm, the road east of the mall, between the IOCC cafeteria (now Gallery 201) and Ashuanipi Social Club (now Teen Center), was completely snowed in. Because of the high drifts, a driver was forced to abandon his car. To help find the car when the storm abated, he tied a pole with a red flag on top. Unfortunately for the owner, the car, pole and flag became completely covered. The snow was too deep for normal snow removal methods, thus, loaders and heavy equipment were brought from the mine. The equipment operator never realized this car was buried under the snow until he saw the crumpled remains being pushed to the sidewalk by the loader. |
