A Scoff an' Scuff's Labrador
Life and Times of Labrador West's Pioneers - 9

  1. What are your memories of your first winter here?

    1. It was very cold just walking a short distance. You would have frostbitten nose and cheeks, even white, frosted eyebrows.
    2. With no television, we really enjoyed the outdoors, visiting friends, etc.
    3. Wearing snow shoes to cross the old campsite to the Bowring Warehouse where the train station is now to pick up groceries.
    4. No indoor parking for my car and trying to get it started in the coldest temperatures I had ever experienced (-40 degrees frequently).
    5. We found it very cold.

  1. What are your memories of the storm of ’82?

    1. We were very fortunate, we never lost the power; therefore, we had heat and lights. My brother was operating a pay-loader at the time. He brought several families here to the house. I think we had about twenty-three people staying with us at that time.
    2. It was scary but it brought out the best in people and reinforced the need for emergency planning.
    3. By 1982, I was widowed and living alone when the power went off. I remember heating water in an egg pan over candles to have a hot drink. Eventually my son, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, reached me. He transported me and my two dogs to one of his in-laws who had heat. But even then we had to walk part of the way.
    4. Feeling guilty because I was warm and comfortable with generator-supplied electricity and enjoying satellite television at my Duley Lake cottage area home while my friends and business associates in town were suffering from the power outage, lack of heat, no cooking facilities, etc. etc.
    5. The wind chill and loss of electricity.

  1. Did you or your spouse work for IOCC? If so, what changes have you noticed?

    1. Yes, he worked at IOCC for 34 years. He was an engineer with QNS&L railway. Since his retiring they have made quite a change. They have gone from what was once a three man crew to a one-man crew per train.
    2. He worked for IOCC while she was busy with the family, church and community. There has been a great reduction in the work force which has really impacted youth situation and town growth. I could write a book on each question, but thank you for including us.
    3. Her late husband worked for IOCC.
    4. No.
    5. Husband worked for IOCC as a supervisor.
