Life and Times of Labrador West's Pioneers - 8
|
- Where do you go on vacation?
- We leave town several times a year. We go our home in New Brunswick and also to Bangor, Maine, where we have a house trailer that serves as a summer cottage where we, our children and their families can really enjoy.
- We usually stay home or drive to Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec.
- I go to Nova Scotia or British Columbia.
- Haven't been "on vacation" in years. After several vacation trips across Canada and from
Florida to California in the U.S.A., I decided that the Labrador scenery, recreational
opportunities, and tranquility had more to offer than distant horizons, so I've spent my
leisure time relaxing at home ever since.
- We vacation in the States, Maritime Provinces, and Newfoundland.

- What do you see as the greatest threat to Labrador City?
- The greatest threat to Labrador City would be no demand for iron ore and the company shutting down.
- The lack of iron ore markets.
- For the citizens to become complacent.
- Complacency.
- A downturn in the steel industry.

- What changes would you suggest to keep our young people here?
- The only way our young people could ever stay in Labrador City would be if they were fortunate enough to obtain a permanent job. If not, they have to leave to seek employment elsewhere.
- Diversity, employment opportunities, and enlarging the University and trade school.
- The only answer is jobs.
- Impossible to keep all our young people here. Some will choose to stay because their
families are here, or jobs which interest them are obtainable. But others will be like
young people everywhere and feel the need to "spread their wings" or seek their future
where opportunities exist to pursue careers not available to them locally.
- Supply more and better jobs.
