IOCC built the schools, maintained them, and paid a percentage of teacher's salaries. In the early 1980s, the churches lobbied the government for the right to own and run their own schools. This resulted in splitting the schools into Catholic and Protestant with separate schoolboards. At this time, IOCC turned the schools over to the respective school boards. This donation included four large buildings. Some saw this as progress, Gary, for one, was not impressed as it lead to the educational standard being lowered.
In 1997 the Newfoundland government decided to get rid of the religious educational system. This decision was made for economic reasons. Now all schools in Labrador are under the authority of the Labrador School Board in Goose Bay.
