United Steelworkers of America - Local Union 5795

Union Building at Labrador City

This is the headquarters for the Local 5795 of The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the main office of the International Representative of District 6 USWA. Local 5795 has twelve executive officers which consist of a president, vice-president, recording secretary, financial secretary, treasurer, guide, inside guard, outside guard, and three trustees. In the mid-1970s, the membership of the union reached over 2,500; however, in the downturn of the early 1980s membership shrunk to a low of 1,024. Present membership is slightly over 1,100.

Although this is a large building, there are so many union workers the annual meeting is held in the Labrador City Arena to accommodate everybody. A barber shop, club and taxation service are located in the basement. This building is special to us because our formal wedding was held here. Although used as a wedding reception hall, as far as we know, we're the only couple ever married here. However, a month after we were married a couple repeated their vows here while celebrating their 25th anniversary.
