Founded in 1925, the Royal Canadian Legion was originally an organization for people who served in the Canadian Armed Forces or Merchant Navy. It is a non-profit, dues-supported, fraternal organization. It helps veterans and their families obtain benefits to which they are entitled. It is also one of the largest community service organizations with a membership of almost a half million. There are a total of 1,600 branches in Canada, twenty in the USA and three in Germany. This organization is probably best known for the Poppy Campaign which is its major fund-raising effort.
Present membership of the Labrador City Legion is approximately 40 people. Labrador City and Wabush branches organize the Poppy Campaign and the November 11th Remembrance Day parade. On November 11th, wreaths are laid at the Labrador City War Memorial to honor the men and women who gave their lives defending peace and freedom. The Legion also organizes and hosts a telethon raising money to help defray the cost for purchasing new equipment for the local hospital. Besides this major effort, they also make monetary donations to minor sports organizations. They are the local sponsor for the Girl Guides of Canada and the local Army Cadets.
