"The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
Established 1871
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is one of the oldest police forces in North America. It was formed in 1871 to "Maintain Law and Order" in the colony [Newfoundland] after the withdrawal of British Imperial Troops.
At the request of Sir Stephen John Hill, the governor of the day, the Secretary of State for colonies arranged the selection of Thomas Foley, First-Class Head Constable of the Royal Irish constabulary, to head up the new force. Its headquarters was established at Fort Townshend where it remains today.
In 1979 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II conferred on the force the prefix "Royal". An honor bestowed on only seven police forces in the commonwealth. [British Empire]
Unveiled on May 26, 1996 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the R.N.C."
