A Scoff an' Scuff's Labrador
Labrador Wildlife

The following pages contain information and photographs of wildlife in and around the Labrador West area. The exceptions are:

  • The whale photos were taken from the ferry at the Saguaney River, Quebec; however, coastal Labrador is a summer "vacation spot" for many species of whales.

  • The moose photos were taken on the island on Newfoundland; however, similar moose live in Labrador West.

  • The swimming caribou photos were taken at Gros Morne National Park on the island of Newfoundland. The other caribou photos were taken in Labrador West.

One of the advantages of living in a remote area is that wildlife have not developed a fear of humans. During the work stoppage at the Iron Ore Company of Canada, in summer 2004, a fox would show up at the picket line to get his share of Tim Horton's donuts. He would come within feet of the striking workers who were manning the picket line. We frequently have black bear or porcupine tracks in the soft gravel of our driveway.
