Wabush Recreation Center houses the area's indoor heated swimming pool and eight-lane bowling alley. There is also a full-sized basketball court, weight room, sauna and other recreational facilities. The Wabush Recreation Commission offices are also housed in the top floor of the building. Recently a teen center opened in this building. The local area craft guild has used the gym facility to house their annual craft fair. The Red Cross uses the swimming pool to teach beginners through to Bronze Medallion training. Water-aerobics classes are also held here. The local scuba club also uses this facility for training sessions. An aqua rehabilitation program was devised by personnel from this facility and a physio-therapist. This program is for patients who are unable to participate in traditional rehabilitation programs, but because of the buoyancy of the water can benefit from water rehabilitation. Besides basketball, the gymnasium area is used for volleyball, indoor tennis, broom hockey and a walking/exercise program. The bowling alley hosts a bowling league and a few nights a week is available for recreational bowlers. The bowling alley hosts the annual fund-raiser for the mentally handicapped. This is a non smoking facility -- even in the bowling alley portion. |
