Old Airport

This modern facility was completed in the early 1980s to replace the old airport building which was located about 500 feet south (152 meters). It provides point of entry to Labrador West for those traveling by plane. Direct air service is available to both Quebec on Quebecair and to Newfoundland and Labrador by Air Labrador or Air Nova.
The paved runway strip is 300 m (984 feet) in width and 1948.8 m (6511.8 feet) in length and 545.9 m (1791 feet) above sea level.
Currently, this airport is served by Provincial Airline, Labrador Airline and Air Canada Jazz. Charter services by Grand Island Aviation and Air Saguenay/Ashuanipi Aviation also use this airport.
Until the opening of Quebec Highway 389 and the Trans-Labrador Highway, the most widely used form of transportation for leaving or returning to Labrador West was by 737 jet plane. When the road opened, there was a sharp reduction in air travel. As the number of passengers decreased, airlines cut back on service provided to this area. Current commercial service is by turbo-prop planes like the Dash-8 and Saab-A340. Most flights are booked solid and many people drive to their destination because there are not adequate seats available.
