Western Labrador Provincial Building

Western Labrador Provincial Building

This building provides provincial government services to the Labrador West area. These include Social Services, Provincial Court, Provincial Occupational Health and Safety, Adult Probation, and Mineral Industry Analyst. Since this is a provincial building, you will not see the Labrador flag being flown here. It flies the Canada, British and Newfoundland flags.

There are no judges living in Labrador West; therefore, the Labrador Provincial Court is serviced by circuit judges. If a person from the area needs to be arraigned and a judge is not available at the time, the offender is flown to the provincial capitol, St. John's. After arraignment, the defendant is returned to Labrador West at which time he/she will notified when the circuit judge will be in the area and what time and date they will stand trial.

Until 2001, there was only one law firm in the area; therefore, one side of each case had to hire a lawyer from another community. This could be very costly, as you would have to pay the airfares, accommodations, rental car and other expenses. Therefore, the court attempts to hold provincial and federal court back-to-back so visiting lawyers can attend to various cases during the same business trip to Wabush, and fees can be divided among the lawyer's various clients.
