Churchill Falls - Tunnels

Gary and Debbie at Churchill Falls

The handsome couple to the left is us standing in front of the Churchill River. To our left is where the water exits the hydro-electric complex.

Water Exits the Powerplant

Tailrace tunnels return water to the Churchill River after it has been utilized for hydroelectric power production. Each outlet is 13.71 m (45 ft) wide, 18.29 m (60 ft) tall and 1,691.64 m (5,500 ft or 1 mile) long. The outlet to the left was closed for maintenance. The tour guide informed us that during maintenance divers are hired to check these outlets for cracks and stability. During these checks divers have reported finding fish alive, well and swimming around in these outlets. The amazing part is that this is the end of the process so the fish have survived the journey through the turbines.
