The power generating room of Churchill Falls Corporation is the largest underground hydroelectric power generating system in the world. These photographs show the generators. Underneath this floor are turbines that produce the power. The generator photographed in the top photo was undergoing maintenance overhaul. This generating complex sits 1,000 feet (305 meters) underground and includes ten miles (16.1 kilometers) of tunneling carved from solid granite. The tunnels are so large that two semis can travel side-by-side with enough clearance above for a single semi on top. When a generator is replaced, it takes two connected transport trucks to transport one generator from either the railway station in Esker or from Goose Bay. |
