The mighty Churchill River once charged its way through the Labrador wilderness. It was later dammed and diverted further upriver to provide the reservoir needed for production of hydroelectricity. To get an idea of the magnitude of this river, the bridge pictured in the above photo is 3/10 of a kilometer (2/10 of a mile) wide. The falls had a 75 m (245 ft) vertical drop; as a comparison the drops of Niagara Falls are 59m (US Falls) and 57 M (Horseshoe Falls). It is eerie to hear the sounds of silence where at one time trappers could hear the sounds of raging water for up to a day before they could see the falls. The river bank closest to the camera shows the snow that perpetually covered the area; the white above the falls is not fingerprints, it is a fine mist. |
