Autumn Farm Scene

After a hot, dry summer, the cool breeze of autumn is refreshing, and the rain from gray clouds is greatly anticipated. North Central Kansas's average yearly temperature is 13½°C (56.2°F); however, July's average daily mean is 26¼°C (80°F). The weather bureau office in this area is at Concordia, Kansas. It was founded on May 1, 1885, and has been located in the same office building since that date.

Windmills dot the Kansas countryside. At one time they were used to draw water for human and cattle consumption. Now rural water districts provide water, and these beautiful windmills are a relic of a bygone era. Since the annual rainfall is 20 cm (8 inches), a method to access water was imperative when settling this land. Smith County's average precipitation is 60 cm (23.76 inches).
