We have often been amazed at the similarities of Gary being raised in Newfoundland and Debbie being raised in Kansas. Both of our fathers were businessmen and our mothers helped them run their business. When we were younger both areas were prosperous: Newfoundland in the fishing industry and Kansas in the farming industry. We've commented on the many hazards and risks undertaken by the men toiling in both industries. As we reached adulthood, large corporations took over both industries and many youth had to move away to create a future for themselves. With no jobs, the single industry towns are dying and their main streets are beginning to look like ghost towns.
Your perspective is formed by the geographical area where you were raised. Debbie, raised in the plains of Kansas, was awed by the beauty of the mountains, forests and clear water of Labrador. Gary, spending most of his adult life in Labrador, was awed by the fields, cattle and treeless, rolling plains of Kansas.
We have opened each other's eyes to the beauty of our native homeland.
This section honors Kansas and the hard-working people that proudly call themselves Jayhawks; also portrayed are some attractions which are unique to north-central Kansas. The highway system cuts a path through farms producing wheat, corn, soybeans and sunflowers. As you travel through this area you will pass mile after mile of cropland, interspersed with reservoirs to irrigate the fields, grain elevators, and small communities. Land not suitable for crops is fenced and used to raise cattle, who share their pastures with the occasional oil well.
