Kensington water tower   Kensington High School

In the mid 1960s Kensington required a larger high school and this addition was built. The reasons a larger school was required is because of the baby-boomers, one-room country schools were closing for students to go to larger schools and more students were staying in school longer. There were about 35 students in Debbie's freshman class and about 24 graduated.

Kensington, Kansas and Alva, Oklahoma, are both homes of the Goldbugs. Click on the towns to go to their web pages.

Goldbugs

The first thing you see when approaching Kensington is the black and gold standpipe or water tower. Black and Gold are the school's colors and the mascot is the Goldbug. Not many towns have enough school pride to paint the water tower in the school's colors.

On the front right leg of the water tower is a gold object. This is the city whistle. One blast denotes 7AM, 12 noon and 6 PM. Three consecutive blasts denote a fire. A long blast lasting several minutes tells citizens to take cover because a tornado has been sighted.
