3. Grain needs to be harvested quickly when it is ripe before it is destroyed by the above possibilities. To allow the combine maximum time in the fields, the grain is dumped into a hopper being pulled by a tractor. |

4. The hopper then dumps the grain into farm trucks to be stored in elevators, bins, and if an abundant harvest, dumped in piles on the ground. During harvest and planting, it is not unusual for a farmer and his family to put in excess of 18 hour days, seven days a week. |
