IOCC's Luce Mine

In the left center of this photo is a drill. These drills use a 17 inch (43 cm) bit and holes are drilled to a depth of 15 to 17 meters (50-55 feet). In the morning, a dynamite truck arrives at the drill site and fills all the holes drilled in the previous 24 hours. As the dynamite slurry sets up, then primer cord is added. The type of dynamite slurry used at Carol Lake has a "sleep time" of 6 days meaning it has to be shot within that time frame.

There was at least one incident of an IOCC employee, unaware of recent drilling activities, who almost fell into one of drill holes. He was quick thinking enough (and strong enough) to put his arms out and catch himself on the sides of the hole. Since that incident, people walking through drill site areas are suppose to wear a belt on which extenders have been fastened; these extenders would stop an employee from falling down into the hole.

At present (2005), there are five drills, five shovels and twenty-three haulage trucks being used at the mine. This equipment is in use twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week 365 days per year.
