Although you can not see it in the photos, there are pumps to keep the mine from filling with water.

This shovel is the same one as shown across the pit in the above photo.
To get an understanding of the size of this shovel, note the number of steps to the loading cab.
The little boy looks quite happily at this huge Tonka toy.

Twice a week, all the men and equipment are removed from the mine and a blast is detonated to loosen the next layer of ore. At the mouth of the mine is a lone shovel.
Large holes are drilled and filled with explosives made at the plant from fertilizer and fuel oil.
