IOCC's Humphrey Mine

Humphrey mine in June 2001. This mine pit is the largest man-made hole in Canada and the seventh largest in the world. Although this spot was once a mountain, now it is a pit one KM (0.6 mile) deep, one KM (0.6 mile) wide and three KM (1.8 miles)long. Any mathematicians want to figure out how many truckfuls have been removed?

This is a close-up of the above photograph. You can see the orange shovel; however, if you look close, you can see the 200 tonne haulage truck starting up the incline carrying it's 200 tonne load. It is in the foreground 2/3 of the way between the shovel and the lower edge of the photo. When you consider one of these haulage trucks is 22 feet tall (6.7 m) or the size of a two-story building, that shows this is a very deep pit.

Humphrey Mine in 2005
Humphrey Mine Pit taken in June 2005 from a tour bus. It is predicted there are still four more years of mining in this pit. Four years ago, the pit was one K (0.6 mile) deep and is now 1.4 KM (0.8 miles) deep. Just below the sign is an orange shovel; as a size comparison, the shovel is approximately 28 feet (8.5 meters) tall. The dark diagonal stripe on the mine face shows different grades of ore.
