After the church service for a mine-worker who lost his or her life as a result of accident or industrial disease, it has become a tradition to form an honor guard as the casket leaves the church. The honor guard consists of fellow workers who wear their hard hats and work clothes. As the casket passes between the honor guard, hard hats are removed and heads bowed. After the casket passes the guard, the hard hats are placed back on their heads. | ||
