Dedication

The plaque below stands before the Local 5795 United Steelworkers of America's Union Building in Labrador City and the words are shown to the right:

Memorial Plaque for union members who died from work related causes.

United Steelworkers of America
Local 5795

Dedicated in memory of members of the United Steelworkers of
America Local 5795 who lost their lives as a result of accidents or industrial disease.

Their untimely death is the force behind our continuing
struggle to improve health and safety.

After the church service for a mine-worker who lost his or her life as a result of accident or industrial disease, it has become a tradition to form an honor guard as the casket leaves the church. The honor guard consists of fellow workers who wear their hard hats and work clothes. As the casket passes between the honor guard, hard hats are removed and heads bowed. After the casket passes the guard, the hard hats are placed back on their heads.
