IOCC History - Project 2
Carol Lake Concentrator
-
To increase recovery of iron ore, a magnetic separation plant was added to the Carol Lake Concentrator in March of 1966.
- In 1970, a major expansion is announced to increase concentrate production to 20 million tons annually. This project was completed and on-stream in 1973.
- In 1981, due to depressed iron ore markets, production at the Carol Lake Project was suspended for eleven weeks. On reopening, the project operated at reduced levels.
- In 1987, IOCC replaced eight dry mills with two wet mills equaling the same capacity.
- In 1996 dry grinding mills 9 and 10 were replaced by wet mill 13. This greatly reduced dust emissions both in the plant and town.
Carol Lake Pellet Plant
-
The original pelletizing plant had four production lines capable of producing 6 millions tons annually; in 1967, two more production lines were added bringing capacity to 10 million tons annually.
- In 1988, after 7 years of reduced production due to depressed world markets, the pelletizing plant once again started operating at full capacity.
- In 1996, as part of a major change in production methods a new flotation plant was added.
