With the completion of Carol Lake Project, development of new mega-projects came to the end. However, an overview of important projects and upgrades during the ensuing decades include:

QNS&L Railway

  • In 1996, as part of a total upgrade, a new control system was installed for the QNS&L.

Carol Lake Mine Site

  • On February 28, 1989, the one billionth ton of crude ore was mined from the Carol Lake Project. This consisted of 75% crude ore and 25% overburden and unforeseeable waste material.

  • On October 2, 1989, 4.1 million tons of crude were dislodged at Carol Lake during the largest blast in IOC history. 500 million tonnes leaves IOCC

  • From start up in 1962, to January 13, 1996, the billionth metric tonne of crude ore (not including overburden) was mined at the Carol Lake Project. Approximately 60% of what comes out of the mine is waste product.
