On May 22, 1960, the Golden Spike was driven commemorating the completion of the 61 km railway link between Carol Lake and Ross Bay Junction. Until 1973, the name of this rail line was known as the "Northern Land Company Railway" and was jointly owned by IOCC and Wabush Mines. Traditionally a pine tree is stuck on the first loaded car from a mine. Since pine trees do not grow in this area, a black spruce was substituted for the first ore car left the Carol Project.
