A Scoff an' Scuff's Labrador
Ice and Snow Sculpture - Interview - 1

The featured artist in this interview is Shawn Daigle, second son of Edouard and Burnadette Daigle. He was born in Labrador City and was raised in Wabush, Labrador. For the last twelve years he has lived in Labrador City.

Question: When did you start sculpting?

Answer: I started helping my dad when I was 5 or 6 years old. I started carving on my own when I lived in the trailer court and continued when I moved to my present address.

Question: From where do you get your inspiration and ideas for the topic you sculpt?

Answer: I have to feel good in order to get the creative juices flowing. After I finish preparing the snow, the snow tells me what I should carve. Until the artwork is finished I'm the only one who knows what the final outcome will be.

Question: What's your favorite winter medium for sculpting?

Answer: I prefer to carve ice as it is more aesthetically pleasing. Due to time constraints it is not always possible to obtain ice suitable for carving as it is harvested from area ponds and lakes. Snow is usually easier to obtain and quicker to prepare; thus, it fits into my busy schedule. The advantage of ice over snow is if weather turns mild or we have rain, ice carvings last longer and don't wash away in a matter of hours.
