Christmas 2003 Ice and Snow Sculptures

Despite 305 cm (10 ft) of snowfall from October until Christmas, there weren't as many ice and snow sculptures this year. We believe there were three reasons for this.

  1. The snow quality for sculpting was very poor since the weather had been unseasonably warm (almost up to freezing many days).

  2. These warm temperatures caused slush on the lakes instead of ice; therefore, there were no ice sculptures this year. This was a disappointment to ice sculptors, snowmobilers and the people who enjoy viewing these works of art.

  3. Snow clearing left high mounds of snow in front of most homes; this would have made it almost impossible to view a sculpture if someone had placed one in their yard. Therefore most of the snow sculptures in town were placed in public areas.

Christmas Nativity

Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus encircled in the protective wings of an angel. This sculpture adorned the entrance to the Roman Catholic Church in Labrador City. At night the sculpture was bathed in colored spotlights adding depth of emotion to a beautiful site.

Making a Snowman

Centennial Park in Labrador City was decorated with this lovely snow sculpture of "Making a Snowman." One day when we drove by, two young children were playing on top of the sculpture. We were surprised how durable the sculpture was.
