Up until two weeks before Christmas 2001, local artists were afraid there would not be enough snow to carve their beautiful, artistic creations. A cold snap followed by warm temperatures and rain caused ice crystals to form and ruin the quality of available snow. Lake ice for sculpting was not an alternative because drastic swings in temperature had ruined its suitability.
Although the artists weren't pleased with the quality or quantity of snow, the town folks, including us, thought their sculptures were beautiful.
