8. Measure to determine how much binding is needed: This skirt has 8 squares 8" big with two sides needing binding. 8 x 8 x 2 = 124 Each 90° angle required 3" fabric (8 x 3) = 24 Each slit to the middle is 14" x 2 = 28" Thus, 124 + 24 + 28 = 176" divided by 42" (width of fabric) = 4 strips.

9. I use scissors instead of the rotary cutter to remove the center of the tree skirt.

10. I straighten the edge of the fabric and assure it is not crooked. If the fabric is crooked, the binding won't lay flat and will be difficult to attach.

11. I cut enough 44" strips to meet the needs determined in #8 above. I cut one extra strip to use as the tie to anchor the skirt to the tree.

12. Placing wrong sides together, I sew each strip to the previous one. I use back and forth stitches at each edge because these strips need that extra strength.
