Tutorial - Binding a Quilted Tree Skirt - 2

Cut

7. Cut along the chosen line.

  Measure

8. Measure to determine how much binding is needed: This skirt has 8 squares 8" big with two sides needing binding. 8 x 8 x 2 = 124 Each 90° angle required 3" fabric (8 x 3) = 24 Each slit to the middle is 14" x 2 = 28" Thus, 124 + 24 + 28 = 176" divided by 42" (width of fabric) = 4 strips.

  Cut Center

9. I use scissors instead of the rotary cutter to remove the center of the tree skirt.

Prepare Binding

10. I straighten the edge of the fabric and assure it is not crooked. If the fabric is crooked, the binding won't lay flat and will be difficult to attach.

  Cut the Strips

11. I cut enough 44" strips to meet the needs determined in #8 above. I cut one extra strip to use as the tie to anchor the skirt to the tree.

  Sew Strips Together

12. Placing wrong sides together, I sew each strip to the previous one. I use back and forth stitches at each edge because these strips need that extra strength.
