Tutorial - Binding a Quilted Tree Skirt - 1

The 45° and 90° angles of a tree skirt are often difficult to bind. Since it is more challenging, it is the example on how to bind a quilt. For quilt edges that are curves (such as a double wedding ring, use the below directions; however, cut the binding on the bias (diagonal) of the fabric.

Baste Edges

1. When quilting the tree skirt, you need to either quilt to the edge or baste the edges. This is easier to do while the quilt is on the frame. This keeps the layers of fabric together so it is easier to add the binding.

  Cut Away Backing

2. Cut away the backing and batting being very careful not to cut the basting stitches.

  Cut Away Backing

3. Continue cutting away the backing and batting; cutting just next to the top.

Cutting The Corners

4. Continue cutting. When I turn a corner cutting, I either fold the removed fabric or cut it off so the weight does not hinder the quilt from laying smooth.

  Hole in the Middle

5. Mark a circle in the center. I use a small jar. I mark dark fabric with white chalk and light fabric with pencil or removable fabric marker.

  Hole in the Middle

6. For a tree skirt, determine where the middle and preferred edge are located.
