Debbie's Quilt Studio - At Previous Home - 1

Fabric Storage

Gary created shelves in what had once been a closet. This closet is 24" deep by 54" wide; thus it holds a lot of fabric. Although most photos of quilt studios show the fabric on shelves, I only keep my 100% cotton viewable and cover them when I'm not using them to protect them from dust and UV. I prefer my other fabric in boxes to keep it tidy and clean. The top shelf is completed projects and quilt batts. The next two rows are quilt fabric and the lower two rows are garment fabric and notions.

We chose pearl gray and white curtains for the quilting room so colors would be more accurately reflected when I am making quilts. I flew to the provincial capital for an outpatient procedure, and when I returned Gary had painted the room, made shelves and had the quilt room almost ready. What a wonderful surprise from a wonderful husband.

Cutting and Sewing area

The cutting and sewing area is next to the fabric closet. Gary made the raised cutting platform for my rotary cutting mat which makes cutting fabric very easy on my back. The platform can be used and then moved to allow more room on the sewing table. The swing-arm lamp from the quilt frame will easily turn and give extra lighting to the sewing area. The ironing board creates the triangle so everything is within easy reach when creating a top. The storage cabinets on rollers holds patterns and sewing paraphernalia. The large piece of cardboard behind the table is used to starch crocheted doilies my mother and sister-in-law create and give us.

The quilt to the left is a mariner's compass. I had wanted to make this pattern for many years and Gary created the pattern using his compass, protractor, ruler and a few naughty words. The rainbow of pastel triangles baby quilt is one of my favorites and the happy colors bring a smile to my face.
