Debbie's Quilt Studio - At Our Retirement Home

Quilt Studio

Quilt Studio

My quilt studio is the end of the basement family room. It's amazing how handy the 7'x11' area is.

On the shelf around the room is where I keep my various rulers, pin cushions, and often small pieces of the current project. In the corner is where I store whatever counted cross-stitch I am working on; the current project is Dimenson Gold's "Sacred Connection" a gift requested by my husband. The oak cabinet contains our electrical panel - so that cuts into wall space to display small projects. The three storage tubs hold in-process projects and knitting. The big window lets in natural light, gives a view of the sidewalk to the front door, and let's me see the weather; obviously it is snowing on the day I took the photos. Above the quilt frame is track lighting with four halogen lights; it's great and I no longer get shadows from my hands while I quilt.

The quilting frame is a Grace Z44 quilting frame. I can pull the white cabinet along with me while I quilt; it holds thread, scissors, marking pens and drinking water. The cabinet holds quilting things and sewing notions. On the frame is a queen-sized, white and rainbow colored Ocean Waves quilt.

The big table has one end for cutting and one end for sewing. Behind the sewing machine is a small tackle box to hold various supplies - which is used at home and ready to go when I attend a quilting class. With the ironing board set up, there is little walking necessary. In the corner is a cabinet with quilting fabric in the middle two shelves and clothing fabric on the top and bottom shelves. On top of the cabinet is my sewing basket and ironing supplies. The ironing board fits between the cabinet and the wall along with a large piece of cardboard for pinning and starching doilies. In the laundry room is another cabinet for completed projects, fabric for my husband's clothing, knits and lingerie fabric. I love my new area. I enjoy being out in the middle of family life instead of off in a room by myself. My quilt books are in the family library and the quilt magazines are in a bookcase with computer books near the computer. That works well, because I'm often printing off photos from the Internet and it's easy to file them.

The next two pages of this section show the quilting room in our previous home.
