Hawaiian

This appliqued accent quilt (54" x 54") is made from 100% cotton rose, green, blue and peach on white; the sashing is a floral pastel in 100% cotton. The backing is white cotton fabric. The binding is matching floral cotton. The batting is fiberfill. It is hand appliqued, set together by machine and hand quilted. It was completed in July 2002. The peach and rose design is Hawaiian Periwinkle and was designed by Marge Keir in Quilter's Newsletter Magazine #184, July-August 1986, page 18. The blue and green design is Hawaiian Carnation, a free pattern by Hawaiian Quilting With Poakalani & Co. This was my second hand appliqued quilt and my first time to do echo quilting. It certainly won't be the last time to do either of these challenging techniques.

In the early 1990's, my sister took our mother to Hawaii to visit her granddaughter and great-granddaughters. Mother fell in love with Hawaii and especially Hawaiian quilts. Several times since then she has mentioned she would love to own a Hawaiian quilt. This quilt is a belated gift for her 86th birthday and Valentine's Day 2002. I used colors that will blend with her living room or bedroom.
